With this started many music videos, movies and even some TV series where the side characters were replaced by gays and lesbians in their own complex story lines. Depicting the sexual orientation of people on television thus became quite acceptable and even fashionable up to an extent. The L Word is based on the same story lines. The show managed to be quite successful and the fact that Snoop Dogg, who is a celebrity in his own right and a well known admirer of females had been on the show goes to say something about the nature of the show itself. The word rose to success mainly because of its bold portrayal of sex scenes and the raunchiness of its characters, without anything apologetic about it. The show also gained a large number of younger audiences because the characters are all fashion forward and attractive in a conventional way. However, the main reason why many believe that the show had managed to be successful had been because of the lesbian theme of the show. The word is a melodrama and apart from the portrayal of its forward sex scenes, the show is meant to touch people on a deeper level. It had been made to increase the awareness and the acceptance of lesbians in the society.
